22 Aug Schiermonnikoog 2018
It was a wonderful weekend: Schiermonnikoog 2018 at Djembé Dramé! About 120 enthusiasts of West African music had transferred to the island by boat on Thursday and Friday. There they are waiting for a nice group of teachers who would take care of the different disciplines of workshops. Weekend workshops for Djembé (with different levels), Dance and Balafoon were offered. In addition, people could register for an extra hour per day for an extra acquaintance with an instrument. So for 3 hours total lessons could be taken in Talking Drum, Kora and Balafon. An hour of singing or Pilates, Dance for percussionists made the weekend complete.
I am lucky and prood to have been able to provide regular lessons for the balafon in recent years for this wgreat weekend. No fewer than seven pupils had registered for the weekend balafon workshop. The Amstelveen class had traveled all the way to Schiermonnikoog: Yvonne, Winnie, Ingrid, Hans, Inger and Bas. Furthermore, Anja (The Bilt group) and Hanneke (private student) were part of the party. For Claudia, Jackie and Philip it was a first or follow-up acquaintance. With a number of pupils, I had also arrived a little earlier on Schier and that is how we were able to play in the days before. At the campsite you could find a place with your tent or rent one of the luxury ‘Safari-tents’ (with fridge!). I like to join the club with their Safari tent!
While in the rest of the Netherlands, with tropical temperatures of around 35 degrees, it was on Schiermonnikoog just sub tropically pleasant with about 25 degrees; lovely We had to look for the shadow for the lessons and play together, but that was fine too.
