Balafon Meeting Camping Weekend

With the cancellation of all kinds of fun percussion and Africa events, there was suddenly room in the agenda for organizing your own activity. Now that Hertme was canceled, it seemed possible to organize a Balafon Meeting Camping Weekend. I invited my students and a number of potential interested parties. A total of 19 people came along and I thought that would be a nice maximun for. Via Inger I ended up at Camping De Kleine Wielen in Leeuwarden; she herself has a permanent place there and one of the meadows “Sloten” was very suitable for events (the 11 different meadows are named after the Frisian eleven cities). I asked Bouba Kayta to join the workshop and he either I learned some details about the treated rhythms and the balafon.

Keeping lessons outside was unfortunately not possible this weekend. But we could go to the Village House ‘Yn’ E Mande ‘of Tytjerkstradeel (the Timbuktu of Friesland!). A beautiful space. Once inside, we forgot that it rained very hard outside …

We worked on ‘Deni’, a rhythm that I learned from Bouba Kayta before. A second song was Kodanya.

Saturday evening eaten in the restaurant of Camping De Kleine Wielen. When we finished eating, the other customers had already returned to their tent or caravan. When asked if we wanted anything else, I suggested a dance floor and some music. That was well received and so we danced for another two hours to music from the 80s and 90s!

On Sunday afternoon it was ready again, and such a weekend is suddenly over quickly. Well, who knows another Balafon Meeting Camping Weekend next year?
